Let the Experiment Begin! Teleworking for a Living
Friday was my last day at work. Well, it was my last day going to work on a regular basis. For a bunch of reasons - none of which are relevant at the moment - I negotiated an agreement with my employer to begin teleworking full-time beginning March 31.
I received all sorts advice from friends and colleagues about teleworking when I first broke the news. I received insights on how to actively participate in office politics to tricks on increasing productivity. From everything I’ve gathered so far, avoiding total isolation will be priority numero uno (anyone remember The Shining?).
I actually began teleworking part-time as an experiment several months ago to make sure it was workable for both me and my employer before taking the plunge full-time. Now that I’ve done it a few days a week for several months, I’ve got a few tricks of my own to share.
Tuesday I move away and I’ll be forced to begin working from home. Let the grand experiment begin!
(Between the terms "teleworking" and "telecommuting," I prefer teleworking. Telework focuses on how I accomplish my work, which is remotely. Telecommuting focuses on commuting, or rather avoiding a commute. My commute into work was a very small part of the reason that I pushed to work remotely.)
