Alternatives To Shutting Down E-Mail Completely

Abstract:

A short while ago Financial Aid Hack discussed boosting productivity by staying focused on tasks and avoiding the temptation to multitask. We addressed reasons why individuals multitask, how to begin each day with an effective game plan, and how to avoid productivity killers, like constant e-mail. The recommendation to turn off e-mail drew the most response. "What if my boss needs me right away or I miss an urgent e-mail?" a number of you asked.

Being pegged as unresponsive is never a good resume builder. But allowing your e-mail to control you sets a dangerous precedent that can lead you to procrastinate or neglect larger, more important projects. The idea isn’t to ignore e-mail all day, but rather to find an efficient way to manage it.
